Tenuta Bossi, owned by the Gondi family since 1592, has always been famous for its wine. Situated on the wooded hills north-east of Florence, in the heart of Chianti Rufina, a wine-growing area famous since Etruscan era. A gem on a hill, over a valley of vineyards 18 km from Florence, between 200 and 400 meters above sea level. The estate has 315 hectares of which 19 of vineyards, 32 of olive groves and the rest is cereals and woods. The majestic Renaissance Villa Bossi, which dominates the valley with its monumental park and cellars, has been restored and modified in the centuries following the purchase. Next to the villa, a church with three altars built by AntoninoGondi.
The family has always believed in the local territory, the Chianti Rufina wine region that makes unique and distinct wines.
We are the 25th generation of wine producers at Tenuta Bossi, the Marquis Bernardo Gondi and sister Donatella, assisted by Bernardo's sons, Gerardo and Lapo. We continue the family tradition trying to maintain what our ancestors have always done: preserve the integrity and beauty of the local environment following the philosophy that has always distinguished Tenuta Bossi, the continuous research for the highest quality products. Skilled artisans, romantic vigneron, we mold grapes into wine giving it a soul that makes unique our wines.
The first historical evidence of today's Chianti Rufina wines dates back to the early Fifteenth century. In the Eighteenth century, the Medici identified a particular aptitude for the production of great wines in this area. In 1716 Cosimo III de Medici included Chianti Rufina are in the 'Bando dei Vini', the fist world law regulating wine.
Our estate is at an average altitude of 350 meters above sea level near mountains but also the rivers Arno and Sieve. This leads great ventilation and humidity and therefore, many temperature changes. Natural elements that give our wines greater primary aromas. The soils of the winery are a mixture of clay, galestro Tuscan stone and limestone sediments. The prevalence of hard stone, makes the vine struggles to reach nutrients, but our wines gain structure and freshness. Two characteristics that allow us to have wines of great longevity and aromas.
In the 19 ha. of vineyard we produce Sangiovese grapes, Colorino of an autochthonous clone that has been reproduced here for over 100 years, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Trebbiano Toscano, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. These grapes, cultivated with respect for the environment and hand-picked with particular care, are vinified in the monumental vaulted cellars under Villa Bossi.
In the 32 hectares of olive groves we have various typical cultivars of the area. About 70% is Frantoio variety, the remaining 30% is Moraiolo, Pendolino and Leccino olive trees varieties.
Marchesi Gondi - Tenuta Bossi has been known for its wine and oil since Renaissance. Bonaccorso Gondi and now his sons Bernardo and Donatella Gondi establish the company in the wine field, experimenting with modern winemaking techniques always keeping a link to the culture and philosophy that has been distinguishing our winery for 25 generations.
At Tenuta Bossi we continue to produce a wine that deeply roots in the magnificent territory of Chianti Rufina and at the same time, experiment with both international and indigenous grape varieties.
The cellars are party located in the basement of Villa Bossi and partly under its park, at the shade of centuries-old trees. Our philosophy is to maintain the secular environment and its high quality traditions. The Gondi family has always distinguished itself as romantic vignerons linked to traditions and territory, qualities that have been handed down by over 25 generations.
A quite by Galileo Galilei has been carved in our hearts as the company's philosophy: "Wine is a mixture of Love and Light”. Love is the great passion of the people who work hard everyday in the vineyard. Light is the Tuscan sun that radiates and nourishes the grapes. Love and Light give us the best grapes to produce the finest wines.
Tenuta Bossi has not renounced to modernity in the cellar. Combining perfect care of the vineyards to produce healthy and ripe grapes, careful vinification under constant human supervision and appropriate use of wood, we get to have unique, elegant and distinct products without losing the taste of tradition. Our red wines, after a suitable maturation in the numerous oak barrels and in barriques, refine in bottle.
